Animation short on the Gaza blockade

From Haartz: http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1068622.html

An animator of the celebrated Israeli war film "Waltz with Bashir" has illustrated a new film depicting the life of a fictional boy in the Gaza Strip during the Israeli blockade of the coastal territory.

Yoni Goodman's short film "Closed Zone" runs only a minute and a half and was created for the NGO Gisha, a group devoted to freedom of movement.

A spokesman for Gisha said that "though the use of a single animate… Continue

Arab reaction

I am writing this post while the war in the Gaza area is going on but I plan to only post it after the violence has stopped. I understand how violence and war brings out the emotions in both sides and that is the issue I want to discuss.

In the interest of understanding and venting, I will be brutally honest, blunt and offensive: I have a problem with the way Arabs react. I am directing this to Arabs not to offend you but to understand. I don’t know how else to explain it but I find the way Ara… Continue

I actually don't speak Hebrew, or at least not enough. One of the things I am doing is interviewing non-English speakers with the help of a translator, or else having volunteers do the interviews and translate them to create English subtitles. It's a good way to involve as many people as possible in the project, but I obviously don't expect you to do any of that unless you actually want to. If you know anyone who might be interested in doing that sort of job, please let me know. I am currently fundraising so that I can actually pay people for this work, but I don't know how much I will be able to offer at this point.

Thanks!

Hi Corey,

This is the letter I have been sending to prospective participants. Hopefully it will give you a clearer idea of what I am doing:

Israel/Palestine Stories: A Multimedia Exhibit
Call for Participants

I am a Jewish Montrealer currently in graduate school at The Ohio State University. I am working on an oral history project documenting the personal stories of Israelis and Palestinians – stories that reflect diverse experiences of the Middle East conflict and offer windows into the lives of ordinary people who have been affected by it. I am recording interviews on digital video and audio (participants choose which medium they prefer), and will create a multimedia exhibit from the stories people tell. The exhibit will be presented in Columbus, Ohio in spring 2010. It will consist of video and audio installations that viewers can watch and listen to while moving through a gallery space. The installations will encompass a series of individual “portraits” highlighting particular, and highly subjective, life experiences as they are narrated from particular perspectives.

The project as a whole does not have an ideological or political agenda, but is intended to invite reflection on the daily, human dimensions of the conflict. My goal is to create a basis for respectful dialogue, one that recognizes the complexity of these multiple realities.

I would like to invite you to participate in the project as story contributors. Participation would involve one or more life story interviews, as well as a series of feedback exchanges (by email, phone, or face-to-face) to guide my own process of editing and representing your story. The time commitment on your part would vary according to your availability.

As I mentioned above, you will have the option of recording your interviews on video or audio, and can choose to remain anonymous in the exhibit. You will receive a DVD copy of the interview(s) and will have the opportunity to review it before I begin editing the material. Should there be any sections of the interview(s) that you wish to remain confidential, this will be respected.

If you are interested in participating in the project or would like more information, please contact me and we can discuss everything in more detail.

Thanks for reading!

Talia Weisz

In terms of what I am asking people, it depends on who I am talking to. I usually start with questions like where were you born, where have you lived, describe your experiences living there, etc. I ask about people's family histories. I usually follow up those questions with more specific ones. The main questions I ask are: what events or issues related to the conflict have affected your life, or what has happened to you or to your family that makes you feel that peace is a possibility or an impossibility? My goal is to allow people to talk about what is important to them, without dictating the direction of the conversation.

Does that answer your question? What are your thoughts?

I can give you a call later this week if you are still interested. And I would love it if you could connect me to other people you know who might want to participate.

Take care,

Talia
